Net Direct Tax Collections Surge 13% Past ₹12.12 Lakh Crore Mark Amid Corporate Growth
India's net direct tax collections expanded by nearly 13% year-on-year to cross ₹12.12 lakh crore for the current fiscal year up to September 17, 2026, driven by an 18% rise in advance corporate tax deposits and strong gains in Securities Transactions Tax (ST…

Demonstrating strong fiscal health and sustained economic momentum across industrial sectors, net direct tax collections in India surged by over 13 percent year-on-year to cross ₹12.12 lakh crore, according to official figures released by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). The robust expansion in gross revenue realizations was bolstered primarily by steady corporate tax payments and increased personal income tax compliance, reflecting higher corporate profitability and expanding formal employment metrics across major urban hubs. Economic policy advisors noted that achieving a major fraction of the annual direct tax budget target midway through the fiscal year provides the central government with substantial fiscal room to maintain planned capital expenditure programs in infrastructure, logistics, and renewable energy corridors. Furthermore, a significant acceleration in automated tax refund processing has reduced working capital friction for small and medium enterprises, fostering improved compliance and business sentiment. Market analysts highlight that resilient direct tax revenues signal strong underlying domestic demand, offsetting external global headwinds and stabilizing sovereign fiscal deficit targets. India's net direct tax receipts recorded sustained momentum in the ongoing 2026–27 financial year, expanding by 12.96% year-on-year to touch ₹12,12,108 crore as of September 17. Official data released by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) highlights that gross direct tax collections surged by 15.02% to reach ₹14.32 lakh crore, driven by strong corporate earnings and steady personal income tax growth. The robust figures reflect resilience across domestic commercial sectors and enhanced tax compliance mechanisms enforced by the Finance Ministry. A major catalyst behind the direct tax growth was the second quarter advance tax deadline on September 15. Total advance tax collections increased 16.18% to ₹5.22 lakh crore, led by a 18% jump in advance corporate tax payments to ₹4.16 lakh crore. Meanwhile, Securities Transactions Tax (STT) receipts posted a sharp 53% surge to reach ₹40,214 crore, driven by record retail participation and equity trading turnover across stock exchanges. Non-corporate advance tax payments, which include self-employed individuals and firms, rose 9.24% to ₹1.06 lakh crore. Parallel to the growth in gross receipts, the CBDT accelerated the issuance of pending tax refunds to maintain liquidity for individual taxpayers and business enterprises. Total refunds issued between April 1 and September 17 climbed by 29.19% to top ₹2.20 lakh crore. Analysts note that with over half of the annual direct tax collection target met before the midpoint of the fiscal year, the central government remains comfortably positioned to meet its full-year fiscal deficit target while sustaining infrastructure expenditure.
